Choosing the roof is one of the most important decisions when building a porch, a shed or a carport. It defines the final look, how hot it gets underneath in summer, how noisy it is when it rains and how much maintenance you'll face in the years ahead. Here is a summary of the options we install most often in Mallorca.
Sandwich panels
Two metal sheets with an insulating core in between. One of the most practical options: good insulation against heat and noise, fully waterproof and quick to install. Tile-effect finishes are available so they blend in better with traditional houses.
- Pros: insulation, fast installation, low maintenance.
- Cons: can look rather industrial if the finish isn't chosen carefully.
Metal sheeting
Lightweight and economical. Works well for stores, stables and work areas.
- Pros: price and light weight.
- Cons: without insulation it gets very hot in the sun and noisy in the rain, and near the sea the material must be chosen carefully to avoid corrosion.
Clay tiles
The most traditional option, and the one that suits a Mallorcan finca best.
- Pros: appearance, durability, good thermal performance.
- Cons: very heavy, so it needs a robust structure and a waterproof layer underneath.
Timber boarding with bitumen felt
Timber boarding is laid, waterproofed with bitumen felt and, if desired, finished with tiles or a cap sheet. From below you see the timber, which gives a warm feel.
- Pros: beautiful from underneath, versatile.
- Cons: more installation work, and the timber needs protecting.
Lightweight corrugated sheets (Onduline type)
Light corrugated sheets that are easy to install. A good middle-ground solution for sheds, log stores or chicken coops.
Reed screening (cañizo)
Not waterproof, but it provides lovely, natural shade on pergolas. It is usually combined with a timber structure.
Which one is right for you?
It depends on the use (seating area, carport, storage, animals), the style of the house, how close you are to the sea and your budget – as well as the load the structure can carry. Send us a few photos on WhatsApp and we'll tell you which option we think suits your project best.
