How to fence a finca in Mallorca: materials, permits and advice

Fencing a finca serves many purposes: marking your boundary, letting animals roam safely, protecting a vegetable garden or simply adding privacy. These are the points we go through with every client before we start.

1. What is the fencing for?

2. Materials

Pressure-treated timber posts (use class 4, suitable for burying in the ground), combined with timber rails or mesh. This is the most natural option in the Mallorcan countryside. We also work with metal posts when the ground or use calls for it, and with stone walls.

3. The terrain

Rock, slopes, seasonal streams (torrents)… In Mallorca the ground is almost never flat and easy. We have to decide how to anchor each post and how to follow the slope without leaving gaps.

4. Permits

Balearic planning law requires a licence to enclose land that is not a building plot (solar), and each municipality sets the conditions: height, materials, plinth or see-through sections. That's why there's no single permitted height across the island. Always check with your town hall before you start.

A useful point: the repair or rebuilding of existing dry-stone walls is treated more simply under the law. We explain this in our article on dry-stone walls.

5. Gates

Good fencing needs good entrances: finca gates wide enough for the vehicles you'll be using, plus pedestrian gates. A Menorcan gate is a beautiful option with real local character.

Shall we talk about your finca?

Send us the approximate length on WhatsApp, along with photos of the land and what you need it for. We'll give you some guidance and, if you like, come and take a look.
