Keeping chickens at home is more and more popular, and a good coop makes all the difference: healthy hens, clean eggs and less work. This is what we bear in mind when building them.
1. Space
Chickens need a covered house for roosting and laying, and an outdoor run to move around in. As a rough guide, allow around 3 or 4 hens per square metre inside the house, and as much outdoor space as you can give them.
2. Predator protection
Feral cats, rats, pine martens or dogs can do a lot of damage. That's why we use heavy-duty mesh, securely fixed and, where necessary, buried or with an apron so nothing can dig underneath. The house must close securely at night.
3. Ventilation without draughts
Ammonia from droppings and summer heat are both problems. Ventilation should be provided high up, protected with mesh, with no draughts at hen level.
4. Perches and nest boxes
- Perches: roosting bars where they sleep, set higher than the nest boxes.
- Nest boxes: dark, well-bedded boxes. If they can be opened from outside, collecting eggs is much easier.
5. Easy cleaning
A large door to get in and clean, or a pull-out tray under the perches, saves a great deal of time.
6. Shade and roof
Summers in Mallorca are tough: the coop needs shade and a roof that doesn't get too hot.
We build bespoke wooden chicken coops, from small ones for the garden to large ones for fincas. Tell us how many hens you have and we'll propose a design.
