The entrance gate is the first thing people see of a finca. As well as looking good, it has to be practical for everyday use. These are the questions we go through with every client.
1. What needs to get through it?
Think about the largest vehicle that will come in: car, van, tractor, horsebox or a builder's lorry. The width of the gate and the room needed to manoeuvre depend on it.
2. Swing or sliding
- Swing gate: the classic finca gate. It needs clear space to open and ground without much slope along the leaf's arc.
- Sliding gate: ideal when there's no room to open inwards or the ground slopes. It needs clear space to one side to slide into.
3. Material
- Timber: the warmest, most traditional option, perfect with stone walls. Needs periodic maintenance.
- Steel: very strong, with few size limitations. Must be well protected against rust.
- Hybrid: a steel frame clad in timber, for the best of both.
4. Pillars and fixings
A heavy gate needs solid pillars. The job often includes building or reinforcing the pillars, in stone or blockwork.
5. Automated?
If you'll be opening it several times a day, a motor is pure convenience. It's best planned from the outset, with the electrical ducting and cabling put in place beforehand.
6. Pedestrian gate
A small pedestrian gate alongside saves opening the main gate when you're on foot.
